Australia Day
- Description:
- Australia Day is Australia's national day held on 26 January annually in all states and territories.
Australia Day commemorates the founding of the first European settlement at Sydney’s Port Jackson in 1788. It’s an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate our country and culture.
Many people use the day to picnic in a park, have family barbecues or play or watch sporting events. In some places, particularly Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, spectacular public fireworks displays are held. In towns and cities, citizenship ceremonies are held to welcome immigrants who have been granted Australian citizenship.
The Australian of the Year Awards are also presented by the Prime Minister to acknowledge those who have made an outstanding contribution to our country and communities.
